Many of us at the moment are facing unprecedented and hitherto unknown stresses and difficulties each day, so it is more important than ever to be able to take time out. We need to re-charge our batteries, refresh our minds and bodies and re-connect with an inner centre of calm. When caring for others it is especially important to also take care of yourself: you cannot pour tea from an empty pot.

There are many short relaxation exercises available on line but here are a couple of short self-hypnotic audios that you might find useful.

Five minute relaxing breath audio by Ann Williamson

Short relaxation audio by Katalin Varga spoken by Charlotte Davies

Also of interest are a couple of papers from 2013-4 that show how effective positive suggestion can be, both in reducing the amount of drugs needed and shortening the stay and ventilation time for those mechanically ventilated in Intensive Care Units. These suggestions can be scripted and delivered via an MP3 player or earbuds and in the 2014 study showed significant benefit over the group that was just played relaxing music.

The feedback from these audios has been extremely positive so far: "I just wanted to thank you so much for the fabulous meditations you sent us. They are absolutely brilliant and have become the soundtrack to my day. Panic began to set in on Monday and I sat down and zoned out. Life saving. We are all so grateful." Many people using them here in challenging times" Received via whatsapp in response to Jean Rogerson's "Relax and Recharge" audio which can be found here https://www.bscah.com/covid-19-resources.
